The Foreign Language Department was founded in 2003, including majors of English and Russian. While cultivating students of their own department, it assumes the responsibility to teach foreign languages for the entire institute. In the 2012 provincial foreign language teaching quality evaluation, the Foreign Language Department was highly evaluated by the experts. At present, there are 50 English and Russian teachers in this department, including three professors, 12 associate professors, 29 instructors and 6 teaching assistants. There are 23 teachers with Master degree, constituting 66% of the teachers under the age of 35. There are 9 teachers who are in the process of getting their Master degree, and one teacher returned from studying abroad. We have also engaged 5 foreign teachers from Britain, Australia, the United States, Russia and other countries. |

There are 4 teaching offices, namely, teaching office of English major, teaching office Russian major, Teaching Office One of college English and Teaching Office Two of college English. The present 4 multimedia classrooms and 9 language labs cover a construction area of 659.75 square meters. The 528 language teaching instruments provide the students with a better study condition and environment. Teachers of this department have taken charge of and participated in 1 provincial scientific research project and 17 scientific research projects of our own institute. Besides, they have taken part in 2 foreign scientific research projects, compiled and participated in compiling many textbooks. In recent years, they have published more than fifty papers in academic journals both at home and abroad. |

The Foreign Language Department attaches great importance to the cultivation of the students’ practice ability, and has initially established 3 practice bases. In the past two years, The Foreign Language Department has cooperated with domestic CIEE and ICE organizations and has chosen more than ten people to have work practice for three months. We will gradually increase the scale for foreign contact. Under the support of the college leaders, The Foreign Language Department has consulted with the University of California, University of West Oregon, British Sheffield University and Kwangju University of South Korea in cooperative education, which can create opportunities for the students to go abroad for further study after graduation. Employment: to go in for English teaching, translation, secretary in universities and colleges, teaching institutes, large and medium-sized enterprises, companies, etc. The major has four-year courses. We enroll English liberal arts examinees. The students will be awarded Bachelor of Arts degree. Russian Major Training Objective: This major is aimed at training the students who have the solid foundation of Russian language, the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, translating and so on, as well as the communication ability of business Russian. What’s more, students will be trained to acquire the basic skills in the application of business Russian and in spoken Russian, know the national situation of Russia, and have certain Russian cultural knowledge. Besides, students will also be trained to be talented in business Russian translation and tour guides with the knowledge of commerce and tourism. The students will be able to engage in trade, teaching, tourism and Russian translation related to engineering technology, petroleum engineering, and petrochemical engineering.? Professional Requirements: Students in this major are required to study the basic knowledge and theory of Russian language, literature, science and technology, history, social culture and so on.
